CDF Mall, the world's largest duty free shopping center funded by Chinese investment, set up its first overseas outlet in Cambodia in February during the Chinese New Year holiday. The shop targets Chinese tourists visiting the temples of Angkor Wat, reports the Shanghai-based China Business News.
Despite the scorching summer heat in Cambodia since the beginning of June, international tourists have been flocking to Siem Reap, the gateway to Angkor Wat with its more than 100 ancient temples.
CDF opened its new outlet in the city in February, with signs at the front of the store targeting Chinese tourists.
A number of lesser-known brands of clothing, leather goods, watches and cosmetics have set up shop in CDF's new store, which covers 4,500 square meters, the report said.
Travel retailer DFS Group owned by the luxury conglomerate Moet Hennessy Louis Vuitton along with South Korean retailers have set their sights on Siem Reap, according to the report.
DFS reportedly plans to set up a duty-free shopping mall of 8,000 square meters that can house more than 700 luxury brands in the city in 2016. However, aside from some luxury hotels and museums, high-rise buildings and shopping malls are scarce in the city.
To attract international tourists, particularly those with most to spend, luxury brand operators are working hard to overcome obstructions to set up stores.
China has become the second-largest source of tourists to Cambodia, behind only neighboring Vietnam. The annual number of Chinese tourists to the country is expected to double again by 2020, the report said.
