The Villarrica Volcano was chosen by CNN as one of the most photogenic in the world.
As the CNN webpage states, it is no surprise that the most dangerous places are many times chosen as the most attractive. This phrase was used as the introduction to a new ranking, this time for the 10 most photogenic volcanoes around the world. This list includes the Villarrica Volcano, located on the shores of the lake bearing the same name, in the Araucania Region.
Chile is part of the Pacific Ring of Fire and is one of the most active volcanic areas in the world. Presently, the Red Nacional de Vigilancia Volcánica (National Network of Volcanic Surveillance) monitors 43 volcanic complexes, including the Villarrica, considered the most active in Chile, as well as the Nevado Ojos del Salado, the highest in the planet with an altitude of 6,891 meters.
One of the characteristics that made the Villarrica Volcano one of the most photogenic, according to CNN, is its perfect conic shape. The red-hot lava lake in its crater´s interior is one of the most important touristic attractions of the Andes Mountain Range in southern Chile.
Another important characteristic of this volcano, as declared by CNN in its article, is its easy climbing access. During a clear day and from its summit at an altitude of 2,847 meters, there are spectacular panoramic views of the Villarrica Lake and the cities of Pucon and Villarrica, places that offer a great variety of outdoor activities such as rafting, kayaking, mountain biking and trekking; the menu goes on.
The CNN list also includes the volcanoes Kilauea in Hawaii; the Kawah Ijen in Java; the Fuji in Japan; the Mount Etna in Italy; the Mayon in the Philippines and the Cotopaxi in Ecuador, among others.
