2015 Copa America will be held in Chile between June 11 and July 4 of this year.

The 44th version of some of the oldest team matches in the world will be held for the seventh time in Chile, transforming our country into the center of international soccer for almost one month. The event, which will attract several of the best players on the planet, will be staged at 8 venues between June 11 and July 4 of this year.

In total, 26 games will be played in the stadiums of cities such as Antofagasta, La Serena, Viña del Mar, Valparaíso, Rancagua, Concepción, Temuco and Santiago – the capital. All of these destinations also have the advantage of being appealing tourism hubs. . The matches will be retransmitted in 200 countries, and around 1,000 accredited correspondents from the mass media are expected to be present to provide exclusive cover.

From the High Andes in the north, down to the forests of the Araucanía in the south; Chile’s diverse landscapes and contrasts will be able to be highlighted; the perfect backdrops for discovering adventure sports, relaxation and well-being,  as well as soaking in the urban vibe , are among several of the experiences that travelers will find in the country.

Below is a brief description of each one of the venues honored with the task of receiving this continental tournament:

Antofagasta: The entry door to the Atacama Desert, the port of Antofagasta emerges as the most important city in the northern region of Chile.. Its strategic location on the coast is the prime location for most of Chile’s copper to be exported.

A walk through the city enables visitors with an unrivaled snapshot of what is perhaps one of the most photographed destinations in Chile: The Gate to Antofagasta – an arch formed over time in natural stone just off the Pacific coast. The city is surrounded by its extensive beaches, which are prominent among Juan Lopez, Santa María island, Mejillones and Hornitos.

Two and a half hours south of Antofagasta is the Paranal Observatory and astronomic complex, home to its Very Large Telescope (VLT) – which just happens to be the world’s most powerful and advanced of its kind.

La Serena: is the main port of entry to the Astronomic Route – a confirmation that the north of Chile has the clearest skies in the southern hemisphere. It is also a beach resort in the summer and attracts Argentine tourists arriving here from bordering cities, such as Córdoba and Mendoza.

Its strategic location offers a generous coastline and a range of fresh fish and shellfish dishes that feature prominently on local menus, accompanied by the excellent wines and Piscos produced in the nearby Valleys of Elqui and Limarí.

Viña del Mar-Valparaíso: Located one and a half hours’ drive away from Santiago (120 Kms) in the north-west, is the port of Valparaíso. In 2003 it was declared a World Heritage Site by the UNESCO and its hills and picturesque streets and houses are the perfect place for weekend strolls. Its many restaurants offer a varied cuisine, as well as a buzzing nightlife in old Bohemian pubs.

Following the road north and along the coast, one cannot miss stumbling over the town of Viña del Mar and its suburb of Reñaca, whose beach and surrounding bars and restaurants play host to the Summer scene in the central zone of Chile. It is this particular location which attracts so many Argentineans seeking relaxation during their vacations, as well as exploring the town’s exuberant nightlife.

Rancagua:
This is the gateway to one of Chile’s most important wine-producing areas. Only one hour’s drive south of Santiago is the Colchagua Valley, perhaps the country’s most visited area for enotourism and a destination which offers a wide range of accommodation. Its marriage between outstanding local cuisine and visits around the wine cellars and vineyards, which extend over more than 20,000 hectares throughout the region, makes it an attractive place to visit for food enthusiasts.

Concepción: This is one of the most important cities in the south of Chile, well-known for its economic activities linked to the forestry industry. Not far away are the High Andes with its ski centers and natural view points of great beauty, not only in Winter but with adventure activities in the Summer season as well.

Skiing, Randonée, dog-sleigh rides and motor skiing are some of the activities on offer during the ski season between June and September of each year. The attractive Chillán Ski center also connects to the beautiful mountain village of Valle Las Trancas.

Temuco: Home to a large community of Mapuches – whom are the main group of indigenous people living in Chile. It is also one of the most scenic areas in the south of Chile, where the visitor can admire the perfect match of lakes, volcanoes, rivers and forests.

The city of Pucón is just one of the unmissable destinations in the Araucanía, especially for adventure tourism. The cities highlights include rafting in the River Trancura, kayaking in the nearby lake and trekking in the parks of Huerquehue and Villarrica, among other activities; all intent on monopolizing the adrenaline rushes caused by physical activity in the wilderness.

Santiago: The finals of the soccer tournament will be played in the Chilean capital, and it is no wonder that the image of Santiago has created for itself of peace, cleanliness and a quality of life acknowledged by visitors, has led it to become one of the trendiest cities internationally for business trips.

It is worth mentioning that Santiago has climbed to the top place in many  rankings of quality of life in the region; to such an extent that – for example – the New York Times highlighted it as being a must-see destination on one’s list of cities to be visited, due toits urban layout which is its  unique trademark.
