Australia Open Kakadu to More Tourists

Darwin, Australia (eTurboNews) -- With its unique archaeological and ethnological reserves, Kakadu’s board of management said it is considering proposals to open areas that have been off-limits to tourists.

The seven-year plan follows recommendations made in the 2004 Morse Report, which includes long-term environmental protection and increased management by the Australian Aborigines.

A new tourist access to the park has been earmarked, in the northeast around Cannon Hill.

Kakadu is jointly managed by the Australian Nature Conservation Agency and the Aborigines tribal elders, representing the traditional owners.

"We hope improved joint partnership between traditional owners and tourism companies will lead to more of the park being opened to visitors," said Greg Hunt, federal member of parliament.

"If owners are comfortable about their role in the park management, then they will feel comfortable about opening up the magnificent new areas. Kakadu can become a model for indigenous development around Australia."

One of nature's marvels, the 20,000sq km park has been described as nature's marvel of coastal fringes, wetlands, woodlands plain, rainforest, rolling hill country and elevated rocky terrain.

Kakadu and the Arnhem Land Escarpment contain one of the longest continuous record of rock art in the world, with around 5,000 galleries of Aboriginal paintings.

Located in the Northern Territory of Australia, it has been inhabited continuously for more than 40,000 years by the region's inhabitants, the Aborigines of Australia. Its unique complex of ecosystems, tidal flats, floodplains, lowlands and plateaus provides habitat for a whole range of rare or endemic species of flora, fauna and animals.

The park's uniqueness has led United Nations agency UNESCO, to accredit it a double World Heritage status for its natural international significance and cultural attributes.
