Hosted by China Tourism Academy, 2022 China Ice and Snow Tourism Development Forum was held successfully on January 5th, welcoming the 30-days countdown to Beijing 2022 Winter Olympic Games.

The 2022 China Ice and Snow Tourism Development Report (the “Report”) released during the Forum giving us a comprehensively summary of the new achievements, new features and new trends of China's ice and snow tourism with the drive of "get 300 million people involved in ice and snow sports" from the Beijing 2022, and proposes new challenges and new measures for the high-quality development of China's ice and snow tourism in the post-Olympic era, with the following key points.
 

1. Ice and snow tourism: Comprehensive upgrade has been achieved

During the eight years since Beijing’s successful bid for the Beijing 2022 in 2015, the ice and snow tourism in China has achieved full-scaled development - from a new industry “0” to “1”, from a winder coverage north to south, from a size small to large, from winter to four seasons availability, from scale to quality, from competitive sports to normal fashion lifestyle, from a “cold” tourism resources to an economic pillar. 
 

2. “300 million Chinese participate ice and snow sports”: from vision to reality

Despite the impact of the pandemic, the number of ice and snow leisure tourists has increased from 170 million in the 2016-2017 snow season to 254 million in the 2020-2021 snow season with various stimulation such as Beijing 2022 Winter Olympics, tourism consumption upgrade and better accessibility to ice and snow facilities nationwide. It is expected that the number of China's ice and snow leisure tourism in the 2021-2022 snow season will reach 305 million trips with estimated tourism revenue of 323.3 billion RMB ($50.7 billion).

3. Ice and snow tourism becoming a new custom in daily life

Beijing 2022 will greatly fuel the passion of the Chinese people for ice and snow tourism. The survey shows that 68.4% of tourists are sure that they will increase ice and snow trips with the movement of Beijing Winter Olympic Games;

90.1% of the people had experienced ice and snow tourism in different ways. 63.3% experienced ice and snow travel 1-2 times every year, and 24.8% even for 3-4 times. High-frequency consumption for this new industry is becoming the new normal in China which makes ice and snow tourism is developing from basic entertainment to an essential segment in people’s life.

4. Consumption structure change with new features and trend

Plan ice and snow trips with new features of “small area, low consumption, high frequency, localization of tourism, self-service, winter season sightseeing and vacation with skiing" has become the new trend.
 
According to the survey, 42.3% of consumers are willing to choose short-distance ice and snow destination, 36% tend to take long-distance vacation, and 17.8% said they would experience both ways.

Sightseeing in winter season and skiing for vacation are two features in ice and snow tourism nowadays. 42.5% of visitors prefer sightseeing while 45.1% favor vacation with skiing.

5. Featured new pattern of ice and snow tourism market through China

The pandemic situation and its normalized prevention and control make the new pattern of ice and snow tourism in China today. Meanwhile, the facilities for tourism improvement and products supply as well as the market-driven demand play important roles in how does it formed today. 
 
These three featured patterns of ice and snow tourism distribution in China presents an overall layout of how China manage different regions to get involved and support this industry.
 
  • Triangle Layout”: Northeast Region (Heilongjiang, Liaoning, Jilin), Beijing-Tianjin-Hebei Region and Xinjiang
It’s expected to reach 300 million ice and snow tourism trips in Northeast Region with tourism income of 500 billion RMB ($78.5 million) in 2025; Beijing-Tianjin-Hebei Region have the potential to welcome 100 million trips with tourism income of 250 billion RMB ($39.2 billion) in 2025; and it’s possible for Xinjiang province to receive 100 million trips in 2025 with a revenue of 200 billion RMB ($31.4 billion).
  • “Rise of the two belts” refers to Qinghai-Tibet Plateau ice and snow tourism belt, and central and western ice and snow leisure tourism belt, both of which contain a huge potential to receive 50 million ice and snow tourism trips, 100 billion RMB ($15.7 billion) of revenue in 2025.
  • “Blooming Nationwide” means leisure products of ice and snow tourism are available and accessible in different places and regions in China through integrated solutions of technology, art, sports, tourism, etc.
