On the morning of October 20th, the first torch of the Beijing Winter Olympics was lit, announcing the official ‘Beijing time’ start to this international event. Data from Tongcheng-Elong, one of the main OTAs in China, showed that the popularity of tourism-related searching in Beijing had increased by 130% from the previous month.
October 27th marked the start of the 100-day countdown towards the opening ceremony. On this date, Ctrip reported searches containing the keyword “Winter Olympics” rising by 236%, a dramatic rise in comparison to the percentage of related searches from the same period last month.

Beijing 2022 has also stimulated the demand of a wider range of products in sports tourism market. Hiking, camping, water sports, cycling and other outdoor sports products increased by 110% year-on-year on Ctrip's in the first half of 2021. According to the "Alibaba 2021 Golden Week Travel Trend Report", during the National Day Holiday in October, the booked amount of surfing, diving and other activities increased by more than 200% month-on-month, and hiking and rock climbing increased by more than 13 times month-on-month.
With the "National Fitness Program" issued by the State Council of China in July this year, sports tourism, including ski tours, is about to embrace the fast development in China.
The Beijing 2022 Winter Olympic Games marks a kick-start for a whole new industry - the 300 million Chinese population has recognized winter sports, and Chinese participation in this will drive it globally in near future with far-reaching influence.
