Chinese tourists accounted for nearly one million of New York City’s more than 60 million visitors in 2016, says The New York Times, and that number has been steadily growing for a decade but Chinese visitors are not enthusiastic about what they see.
Li Chen who visited from Beijing told the times that “he and the five friends he was sightseeing with on Friday expected New York to have taller buildings and wider streets. They were also disappointed that they could not get a look inside the New York Stock Exchange.”
According to the Times, Chinese visitor numbers surpassed Brazilians and Canadians this year and will likely surpass British visitors by 2022.
Currently, Chinese travelers in New York travel mostly in groups, but that is changing. NYC & Company, the tourism marketer for the city, says that is working to target small groups and those traveling on their own.
“That individual travel market is the biggest opportunity,” Fred Dixon, chief executive at NYC & Company told The New York Times. “That’s the future of the Chinese market.”
There is also a growing number of younger Chinese travelers who are keen on visiting New York City.
Emily Rafferty, Chairwoman of NYC & Company, tells the Times that she had recently attended a conference in Shenzhen, China, and met a group of local university students.
“They were all wanting to come over to America,” Rafferty said. “The number of people under the age of 35 there is huge.”
