China And Cyprus Sign Tourism Cooperation Agreement

Shao Qiwei (Director-General of China National Tourism Administration) met with Antonis Paschalides (Minister of Ministry of Commerce, Industry and Tourism of the Republic of Cyprus) in Beijing

On May 13, 2009, Shao Qiwei (Director-General of China National Tourism Administration) met with Antonis Paschalides (Minister of Ministry of Commerce, Industry and Tourism of the Republic of Cyprus) in Beijing. The two parties made friendly talks with respect to continuing to strengthen tourism cooperation, and signed Tourism Cooperation Agreement between China National Tourism Administration of the People’s Republic of China and Cyprus Tourism Organization, which will contribute to the cooperation in tourism promotion, tourism exhibition, tourism education, training and many other fields.

Director-General Shao Qiwei gave an introduction to the profile of Chinese tourism industry at first. He said that with China’s reform and opening up as well as continuous improvement of people’s living standards, Chinese tourism industry has entered into the rapid-development phase. This year, the number of outbound tourists and inbound tourists will decrease due to the financial crisis and the impact of Type A Influenza H1N1, which, however, will not affect the overall long-term growth momentum of tourism industry.

Shao Qiwei remarked that with the ever-increasing number of Chinese tourists, various countries have also made greater promotion and propaganda efforts in China, which have mainly taken measures in the following three aspects: Firstly, mutual participation in exhibitions and conferences held by each other; Secondly, establishment of business relationship with major tourist source provinces in China; Thirdly, talent exchanges. Shao Qiwei also invited Paschalides to head delegations to participate in Kunming International Travel Fair in November 2009 and Shanghai World Expo next year.

As Shao Qiwei pointed out, China and Cyprus have maintained good cooperation relationship in politics, economy, culture and other fields. And Shao Qiwei hoped to further strengthen tourism between the two countries and increase the tourists’ exchange visits by virtue of the execution of Tourism Cooperation Agreement. In particular, he emphasized that China pays special attention to the safety issue for Chinese tourists abroad.

As Paschalides said, tourism is an important industry for Cyprus, and Cyprus is also a bridge connecting Europe and the whole world. He was pleased to see the rapid development of Chinese tourism industry in recent years and expressed his willingness to head delegations to China and participate in various exposition events so as to increase the bilateral information exchanges. At the same time, Cypriot Counterparty also welcomed the Chinese side to duly organize delegations for the purpose of participation in exhibitions and conferences in Cyprus.
