Chile's capital has been selected by the users of TripAdvisor as a 2013 Travelers' Choice destination, placing it sixth on the list of the top 25 travel spots in South America.
In recent years, Santiago has blossomed as a destination, establishing itself as one of South America's top travel cities. Now Chile, along with the election of Torres del Paine as the 8th Wonder of the World, can add a new distinction to the list. The country's capital has been selected by the users of TripAdvisor as a Travelers' Choice destination, placing it sixth on the list of the top 25 travel spots in South America.
The Travelers' Choice awards are given out annually by TripAdvisor, which is one of the world's largest travel websites, and recognize the most popular tourism destinations based on the millions of reviews & opinions of travelers. The 2013 South American selection was led by Rio de Janeiro, Buenos Aires and Machu Picchu, putting Santiago in the company of long established world-class destinations – a sure sign of its positive growth.
Andrea Wolleter, General Manager of Turismo Chile, which is the organization charged with Chile's international tourism promotion, noted that the award "says a lot, as the selection of these destinations is made by the vary travelers to these places, making it much more authentic and reliable for the general public."
The TripAdvisor family of sites makes up the world's largest online travel community, with over 260 million unique monthly visitors and over 100 million reviews and comments on everything related to travel including accommodations, restaurants, and attractions.
