Chile has possessed the Andean Astronomical Observatory, the first touristic observatory, in its capital. U.S. $ 2 million has been invested in the project and it will be transformed into one of the largest amateur astronomical arrays in South America.
The growth of Astronomical Tourism has been an important development in
Chile in recent years. The implementation of the two largest astronomical arrays in the world, the Paranal and ALMA in the Atacama Desert, has encouraged the arrival of foreign tourists from Europe,
USA and Australia.
Santiago has not escaped these developments and possesses the Observatorio Astronómico Andino (Andean Astronomical Observatory), the first touristic observatory in the Chilean capital, which has a main dome with three telescopes, an observation deck and meeting rooms equipped with audiovisual media.
U.S. $ 2 million has been invested in the project. It is a private initiative of businessman Jose Sanchez, who has transformed it into one of the largest amateur astronomical arrays in South America.
In its dome and on its terrace, visitors can make nighttime observations through 9 telescopes and daytime observations through three solar telescopes with Hydrogen Alpha filters, which reveal details of the sun. Among the objects that it is possible to observe are galaxies, nebulae, star clusters, stars and planets.
The OAA is located at 8 kilometers along the way to Farellones and 20 minutes from the eastern side of the capital, in the Andes, 1,240 meters above sea level.
