Brunei Sultan Bolkiah Meets with Visiting Chinese Foreign Minister Yang Jiechi
Brunei Sultan Haji Hassanal Bolkiah Mu'izzaddin Waddaulah met with visiting Chinese Foreign Minister Yang Jiechi in the Royal Palace.
Brunei Sultan said that Brunei and China enjoyed a long-running friendship as well as long-term friendly exchanges between the peoples of the two countries. In recent years, the two countries saw frequent exchanges of high-level visits and the unceasing expansion of their cooperation in the fields such as economy, trade and humanities, Brunei Sultan said. He noted that Brunei's royal family and government attached great importance to relationship with China and regarded it as one of the most important bilateral ties. He said that Brunei was willing to continue to maintain and expand the good relations between the two countries and further strengthen the cooperation in the fields of energy, agriculture, infrastructure and tourism so as to push for in-depth development of bilateral ties. Brunei Sultan reaffirmed that his country adheres to the one-China policy.
Yang said that China and Brunei saw close economic, trade and personnel exchanges since the ancient times and the traditional friendship between the two countries developed substantially since the two countries established diplomatic ties 16 years ago. China regarded Brunei as a good neighbor and good partner. Both sides had maintained close high-level exchanges and the mutual trust in the political field between the two countries had been deepening, Yang said. He also said that cooperation between the two countries was expanding in various fields, including economy and trade, and international and regional affairs. Yang noted that relations between China and Brunei now have entered into a new period of overall development and he believed that the prospect for cooperation between the two countries is broad. Yang highly appreciated the contributions made by His Majesty Sultan Bolkiah, as well as Brunei's royal family and government to pushing forward bilateral ties and thanked for Brunei's long-standing adherence to the one-China policy.
Yang said China attaches great importance to furthering ties with Brunei and is ready to work with the country to advance bilateral pragmatic cooperation in an all-round manner and push bilateral ties to a new level.
On the same day, Yang also held talks with Minister of Foreign Affairs and Trade of Brunei Mohamed Bolkiah. Both sides reached a five-point consensus to further boost the all-round development of bilateral ties. According to the consensus, China and Brunei will maintain high-level visits and enhance their traditional friendship. The two countries also agreed to tap complementary advantages and the potential for cooperation to deepen and expand their economic and trade cooperation. Meanwhile, the two countries agreed to strengthen cooperation in the areas such as agriculture, petroleum engineering technology, port development, road and bridge constructions. The two sides also will expand their cooperation on culture, education, tourism and human resources development and further deepen consultations and cooperation between the foreign ministries of the two countries. They also vowed to develop mutually beneficial training programs between the two foreign ministries.
