The annual number of visitors from China topped 300,000 for the first time in the year to April 2015, Statistics New Zealand has revealed.
And the overall total of 2.96 million visitors is the highest-ever annual figure.
The total number was seven per cent higher than the April 2014 year.
"The 302,100 visitor arrivals from China in the April 2015 year were up 26% from the previous year, mostly due to holidaymakers," population statistics manager Vina Cullum said.
Visitor arrivals in April were up six per cent to 238,000, again largely from China (up 6,600) and the United States (up 2,800).
