The Roman Baths, run by Bath & North East Somerset Council, has been awarded the Learning Outside the Classroom Quality Badge which is a national accreditation combining the essential elements of provision – learning and safety. This badge is awarded for organisations offering good quality teaching and learning experience for young people aged 0-19, in a safe and healthy environment.
Stephen Clews, Manager of the Council-run Roman Baths said: “The Roman Baths is a fantastic place to learn about all kinds of subjects, and things learnt here as part of a memorable visit are far more likely to be remembered than things learnt in a routine lesson at school”.
“We can offer taught sessions, as well as informal learning through our interactive displays, children’s audio tour and encounters with costumed characters. We think the opportunity we provide for young people to learn in their family setting as part of a great day out can be just as valuable as the accredited learning they achieve through formal education”.
The Roman Baths provides a full range of learning activities and ideas for around 100,000 schoolchildren every year. Subjects covered include science, language and mathematics as well as history and archaeology.
This is the second award this year for the education service at the Roman Baths. Earlier this year it was given a Sandford Award for the high quality of its Heritage Education service.
Visitors can join in family activities at the Roman Baths on Saturday 5 December between 10.00-1.00pm and 2.00-4.00pm, exploring Roman winter celebrations. Heritage Services organises similar family events throughout the year for the Council, which are free to local residents with a Discovery Card, and at no extra charge to the general visiting public.
At the Fashion Museum too, a special free family event Dressing Christmas is being held on Sunday 13 December, between 10.30am and 12.30pm. Visitors are invited to create a fashionable Christmas decoration for their tree. Entry to the Fashion Museum is also free for local residents with a Discovery Card.
