Bath & North East Somerset Council, together with a range of partners, is organising a day of activities to celebrate Bath’s World Heritage Site on Saturday 18 April.
This coincides with International World Heritage Day, marked by other sites across many nations.
World Heritage designation is a tremendous accolade for Bath, recognising the city as belonging to an exclusive collection of world-wide sites which surpass local or national importance and are part of a shared global heritage.
The city demonstrates multiple layers of cultural genius. The Romans had the foresight and technology to harness the only hot springs in this country, and in the same fantastic landscape setting the Georgians built an elegant new town which influenced the architectural and social traditions of a nation.
Cllr Terry Gazzard, the Council’s Cabinet Member for Development and Major Projects, Tourism, Leisure and Culture (Conservative, Abbey), said: “Bath & North East Somerset Council is very proud of Bath’s heritage and sees the World Heritage Status as a real inspiration, not a constraint.
“To truly appreciate the city you have to understand it. This is where World Heritage Day comes in, encouraging all of us to enjoy finding out more about this very special place and ensuring future generations can appreciate it too.”
During the day the range of activities available include: guided tours of the Abbey Tower and Abbey Floor, special walks of the city organised by the Mayor’s guides and the National Trust. In addition, the Ermine Street Guard will perform military re-enactments in Kingston Parade, followed by a performance by actors from the Roman Baths. And you can also learn how to dance the Minuet.
