South African President Meets with Chinese Foreign Minister Yang Jiechi

On January 16, 2009, South African President Kgalema Motlanthe met at the Presidential Residence with visiting Chinese Foreign Minister Yang Jiechi.

Motlanthe said South Africa accords high priority to developing all-around cooperation and exchanges with China and is willing to make concerted efforts with the Chinese side to further strengthen exchanges and cooperation between the two countries in all areas and at multiple levels. He also called on both sides to maintain communication and coordination in international and regional issues, jointly cope with the international financial crisis and push forward bilateral strategic partnership.

For his part, Yang said China and South Africa have witnessed rapid development of their strategic partnership in recent years and new progress made in friendly cooperation in all areas. Furthering their relationship is in line with the fundamental interests of the two countries and peoples, he added. The foreign minister said China is willing to step up exchanges and coordination with South Africa to maintain the momentum of high-level exchanges, strengthen the coordinating role of the national bilateral commission and implement the key cooperation plans. He also urged both sides to enhance coordination on major international and regional issues and promote mutually beneficial economic and trade cooperation. Yang also suggested both sides further expand exchanges and cooperation in the areas of culture, education, science, technology, journalism and academics, build up mutual understanding and friendship between the two peoples and push China-South Africa friendship to a new level.

Yang also called on the two countries to enhance exchanges and cooperation in jointly dealing with the international financial crisis and contribute to global economic stability and development.

On the same day, Yang held talks with South African Foreign Minister Dlamini Zuma to exchange in-depth views on bilateral ties as well as international and regional issues of common concern. Following their talks, the two foreign ministers jointly met the press.
