On January 8, 2008, President of the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) Josephe Kabila met with visiting Chinese Foreign Minister Yang Jiechi at the Presidential Palace in Kinshasa.
During the meeting, Kabila said the DRC is now in a crucial period of peace and reconstruction and many things are waiting to be done. He said China has offered precious support and assistance to the DRC. A friend in need is a friend indeed and China is a sincere friend of the DRC people, he added. Kabila said the two countries share the same views on many key issues and there is huge potential for their cooperation. The DRC attaches great importance to enhancing friendly cooperation with China from a strategic perspective, he said. Recent years have witnessed increasing exchanges and cooperation between the two countries in the areas of economy, trade and investment, he said, expressing the DRC's willingness to work with China to promote the cooperation.
Yang said China and the DRC, as good friends and partners, always show mutual understanding and support on issues concerning state independence, sovereignty and territorial integrity. China thanks for the DRC's adherence to the one-China policy and supports the DRC government's efforts to consolidate domestic peace, promote national reconciliation and achieve economic growth, said Yang, pledging to continue to participate in the United Nations peacekeeping operations in the DRC. Yang said China is ready to further strengthen cooperation with the DRC in economy, trade and other areas and well implement relevant cooperation projects to achieve mutual benefits and a win-win situation, bring benefits to the people of the DRC and push bilateral ties to a higher level.
On the same day, Yang held talks with DRC Foreign Minister Mbusa Nyamwisi. Both sides made positive comments on China-DRC ties, agreeing to enhance bilateral friendly exchanges, deepen mutual understanding and friendship, strengthen political dialogue and exchange views on bilateral as well as major international and regional issues in a timely manner to coordinate positions. They also pledged to further implement the achievements made at the Beijing Summit of the Forum on China-Africa Cooperation, and expand exchanges and cooperation in the fields of economy, trade, infrastructure construction, culture, education, health and human resources.
The two foreign ministers also signed a couple of bilateral cooperation documents including an economic and technological cooperation agreement between the two governments.
