Chinese Tourists Spent an Average of $10,830 in Brazil in August
Although demand resulting from the Rio Olympic Games has fueled price hikes for flights and hotels, many Chinese tourists are nevertheless unable to resist the idea of visiting Latin America during the "sexiest Olympics in history."
Chinese citizens who traveled to Brazil this past August spent 72,145 Chinese yuan ($10,830) on average for trips lasting 10 days, according to a recent report by a Chinese travel site. The report showed that this amount was roughly 35 percent higher than the average expense of travelers who visited between January and July.
 
Although demand resulting from the Rio Olympic Games has fueled price hikes for flights and hotels, many Chinese tourists are nevertheless unable to resist the idea of visiting Latin America during the "sexiest Olympics in history."
 
The number of Chinese people booking tours to South America between January and August 2016 saw a year-on-year increase of 150 percent, with Brazil, Argentina, Mexico, Chile and Bolivia as the top destinations, according to the report. As a result, the website has added to its site more than 600 tourism products relating to Brazil, tripling the number from last year.
 
A tour guide from the site explained that tour groups to South America consist mostly of investors, entrepreneurs and high-level business managers, generally between 40 and 65 years old. This demographic does a great deal of consuming.
 
Chinese travelers visiting Brazil in August came mostly from Beijing, Shanghai, Tianjin, Guangzhou and Shenyang, with visitors from northern China seemingly more interested in the Olympic Games.
