Chinese remain biggest spenders for international shopping
China was still the biggest-spending nation for global shopping in 2013

Other countries might be catching up, but China was still the biggest-spending nation when it came to global shopping in 2013, according to new statistics.

“The Top Ten Globe Shopper Nations Review”, an annual spending habits report, has revealed that the Asian country splashed the most cash on tax-free shopping around the world last year, with a 20 per cent growth in spending since 2012.

It was followed by Russia in second place, thanks to the nation’s penchant for purchasing fashion and clothing (the Chinese prefer to spend on watches and jewellery), with Indonesia claiming third position.

The report, conducted by international shopping and spending experts Global Blue, lists the top ten nations which spent the most on tax-free shopping via the company over the course of the year.

Newcomers to this year’s list include Saudi Arabia, the United Arab Emirates and Hong Kong.

Also on the rise is Thailand, which has seen an increase in spending of 23 per cent since 2012 and sits in sixth place on this year’s list.

All of the countries in the top ten shopped heavily in at least some of the most popular Tax Free Shopping destinations such as France, UK, Italy, Germany and Singapore.

Other popular locations for splashing out included Finland, Austria, Spain, and South Korea.
