Hu Jintao Holds Talks with His Chilean Counterpart
Chinese President Hu Jintao held talks with his Chilean counterpart Sebastian Pinera at the Great Hall of the People, and expressed that China is ready to work with Chile to enhance bilateral cooperation in four aspects including culture and tourism in a bid to push China-Chile comprehensive cooperative partnership to a new level.

On the afternoon of November 16, 2010, Chinese President Hu Jintao held talks with his Chilean counterpart Sebastian Pinera at the Great Hall of the People. Hu extended welcome for Pinera's visit, which coincides with the 40th anniversary of the establishment of China-Chile diplomatic ties. Hu also extended his congratulation on the 200th anniversary of Chile's independence and the successful rescue last month of 33 miners who had been trapped 700 meters underground for more than two months.

Hu said bilateral relations have witnessed sustained, in-depth development since the establishment of diplomatic ties 40 years ago, especially since the establishment of China-Chile comprehensive cooperative partnership in 2004. Both sides have maintained close high-level contacts and deepened political trust. Chile has long adhered to the one-China policy on Taiwan and other major issues and offered understanding and support to China, which China highly appreciates. Bilateral economic and trade cooperation has been expanding with the two countries being each other's important trade partners. Both sides have also conducted colorful and unique humanities exchanges and kept sound communication and cooperation in international and regional affairs.

Pinera said Chile thanks for the sympathy and condolences extended by the Chinese government when Chile was hit by the massive earthquake disaster and sincerely congratulates on the huge success of the Shanghai World Expo. The Chilean side admires the splendid achievements made by China over the past three decades of reform and opening up. Chile appreciates China's pursuit of scientific development and is ready to exchange experience with China in this regard. Chile-China relations enjoy a solid foundation. Chile is ready to work with China to further consolidate and develop bilateral comprehensive cooperative partnership. Pinera said Chile would firmly stick to the one-China policy.

"The facts prove that the development of China-Chile relationship complies with the fundamental interests of both peoples and is conducive to the common development of the two countries," said Hu. China is ready to work with Chile to enhance bilateral cooperation in the following four aspects in a bid to push China-Chile comprehensive cooperative partnership to a new level.

First, deepen political relations and build up mutual trust. China is ready to maintain frequent exchanges with Chile at high and other levels. He called on both sides to give full play to the existing cooperation mechanisms and exchange views in a timely manner on issues of common concern to expand consensus.

Second, advance pragmatic cooperation and seek mutual benefit. Both sides should expand bilateral trade and two-way investment based on equality, mutual benefit and win-win progress and diversify trade ties by boosting cooperation in areas like agriculture, science and technology, mineral development, light industry, household appliances and machinery.

Third, increase cultural and people-to-people exchanges and build up mutual understanding. China is ready to enhance cooperation with Chile on culture, education, sports and tourism, and supports expanded exchanges between the regions, non-governmental organizations, academia, press and media of the two countries.

Fourth, enhance multilateral cooperation and promote common development. Both sides should keep closer coordination within international and regional organizations and enhance communication on major issues.

Pinera fully agreed to President Hu's proposals on furthering bilateral ties, saying that despite the distance keeping the two countries apart, both countries have maintained very close ties and conducted fruitful cooperation in recent years. Pinera said he was always full of passion to enhance pragmatic cooperation with China. He said Chile was ready to strengthen political ties and high-level exchanges with China. He hailed the sound development of bilateral trade cooperation, saying China is the largest trading partner of Chile and the FTA between the two countries has made smooth progress. Both sides should strive to advance service trade and investment. Both sides should also step up humanities and regional exchanges to further their ties. Chile is ready to work with China on major international issues including economic cooperation in the Asia-Pacific region, the Doha Round of trade talks, the reform of global financial institutions, coping with the global financial crisis and climate change.

Following the talks, the two heads of state attended a signing ceremony of relevant cooperation documents between the two countries.
