On June 3, 2009, Chinese Premier Wen Jiabao held talks with visiting Malaysian Prime Minister Najib Tun Razak during their meeting at the Great Hall of the People.

Wen said recent years have witnessed all-round, in-depth development of China-Malaysia relations, pointing to the fruitful pragmatic cooperation between both countries in all areas. Malaysia has become China's largest trade partner among members of the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN). Both sides have cooperated closely in pushing forward East Asia cooperation and promoting regional stability and prosperity.

Wen said in the new situation, China and Malaysia should stick to the Five Principles of Peaceful Co-existence, take each other's core interest into consideration and continue to help each other for common development. This year marks the 35th anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic relations between China and Malaysia. Wen said that China is ready to work with Malaysia to take this opportunity to actively implement the joint action plan on strategic cooperation and lift bilateral ties to a new level. In face of the severe impact of the global financial crisis, Wen said both sides should work closely to tide over the difficulties. He raised a four-point proposal for further cooperation between the two countries. First, promote trade diversification and maintain the growth of bilateral trade. Second, enhance mutual investment and well build key projects. Third, deepen financial cooperation and safeguard financial stability. Fourth, strengthen coordination on regional affairs and push forward in-depth development of regional cooperation.

Najib said it is his honor to choose China as the first non-ASEAN destination since he took office in April. "This shows that Malaysia attaches great importance to the development of Malaysia-China relations." Najib noted that his visit is aimed at further accelerating the development of the friendly cooperative ties and pushing bilateral cooperation towards more outcome based on the contributions made by the elder generation of leaders of the two countries 35 years ago.

Najib said he fully agreed with Wen's proposal on advancing Malaysia-China relations, saying the new Malaysian government will commit to all-round development and enhancement of bilateral ties and is ready to enhance cooperation with China in the fields of economy, finance, resources, energy and infrastructure construction on the basis of reciprocity and mutual benefit. He urged both sides to actively implement the joint action plan on strategic cooperation and join hands to cope with the financial crisis and push forward bilateral ties.
