British Prime Minister Meets Chinese vVice Premier,Calls For Further Co-operation

British Prime Minister Gordon Brown met visiting Chinese Vice Premier Wang Qishan in Downing Street Monday, hailing the comprehensive strategic partnership between the two countries.

British Prime Minister Gordon Brown (R) meets with visiting Chinese Vice Premier Wang Qishan at 10 Downing Street in London, Britain, May 11, 2009. Wang and the British Chancellor of the Exchequer Alistair Darling co-chaired the Second China-UK Economic and Financial Dialogue in London on Monday.

Brown said the partnership between Britain and China has developed well and bilateral cooperation in dealing with the global financial crisis and promoting economic and trade relations has been fruitful.

He said Britain is willing to further strengthen cooperation with China, tap potential and expand bilateral trade.

The British side hopes to boost bilateral coordination and cooperation in coping with climate change and seek a success of the Copenhagen Conference, which is designed to lay out global actions against climate change after 2012, when the Kyoto protocol's obligations expire, Brown said.

He added that the two countries should work together to boost the reform of international financial institutions and to revive the world economy, which not only serves the interests of both countries, but also benefits the development and prosperity of the whole world.

Wang said the China-Britain relations have developed smoothly in recent years with frequent high-level exchanges of visits, increased political mutual trust and in-depth cooperation in various fields such as trade, investment, technology, education and culture.

Wang said the second China-UK Economic and Financial Dialogue achieved a complete success through joint efforts. Its achievements not only reflected the consensus reached at G20 Summit in London, but also highlighted the good relations between China and Britain.

Wang further pointed out that the current global financial crisis has not bottomed out yet and it is imperative for the international community to deal with the challenges posed by the global financial crisis and the global economic downturn.

He said that since the outbreak of the financial crisis last year, a series of measures adopted by the Chinese government have taken effect, which is of remarkable significance for boosting the world's economy to recover as soon as possible.

The Chinese vice premier said efforts should be made to transfer the confidence of politicians to the credit needed to restore market through government operations so as to speed up economic growth.

Also on Monday, Wang met Prince Andrew and attended the celebration of the 80th anniversary of the establishment of the Bank of China London Branch.
