Around noontime, April 11, 2009, the Thai government declared postponing the ASEAN related summits scheduled to open on the morning in view of domestic situation. The leaders, who have arrived in Thailand for the summits started to return home. Thai Prime Minister Abhisit Vejjajiva personally went to see Premier Wen off at the airport and both sides held a brief meeting.
Thai Prime Minister Abhisit expressed profound apology for postponing the ASEAN related summits and sincere thanks for China's patience, sincerity and understanding. He said that Thailand will continue to make positive efforts to promote the cooperation between ASEAN and China.
Premier Wen said that China attaches great importance to the ASEAN related summits and has made thorough preparations for the summits together with related parties. China hopes that the summits could strengthen confidence of related parties, get them united to address the global financial crisis, and push forward the cooperation in East Asia. "I feel regretful the ASEAN related summits have been postponed, but I understand the Thai government's decision. As Thailand's friendly neighbor, China hopes that Thailand's domestic situation will return to normal at an early date. The Chinese side will continue to push forward the development of the good-neighborly friendly cooperation between China and Thailand and between China and ASEAN.
Prime Minister Abhisit said that Thailand and China are like one family. The bilateral relationship develops well. Thailand treasures the traditional friendship with China and is resolutely committed to the friendly cooperation with China. China's economy is developing with a good momentum, which gives hope not only to Thailand but also to the whole region. This is critical for Thailand and the region to overcome the financial crisis and achieve early economic recovery.
Premier Wen also had cordial and friendly talks with President Gloria Macapagal Arroyo of the Philippines, Prime Minister Thein Sein of Myanmar, Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong of Singapore, and other leaders of ASEAN countries at the airport.
Premier Wen Jiabao's special plane returned to Beijing from Pattaya, Thailand on the evening of April 11. The accompanying staff also arrived in Beijing on the same plane.
