Albanian Prime Minister Meets with Chinese Assistant Foreign Minister Wu Hongbo

On February 25, 2009, Albanian Prime Minister Sali Berisha met with visiting Chinese Assistant Foreign Minister Wu Hongbo in Tirana. Both sides exchanged views on bilateral ties as well as celebrations of the 60th anniversary of diplomatic ties between the two countries.

"Albania attaches great importance to developing bilateral relations with China, and our two countries have been enjoying a traditional friendly relationship during the past 60 years," Berisha said. He said China is an important force in preserving world peace and stability. The Albanian government is ready to enhance pragmatic cooperation with China in all areas, especially in the economic and trade sector. The year 2009 will see the 60th anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic relations between China and Albania. Berisha hoped that both sides will make joint efforts to ensure the success of celebrations of the event and take it as an opportunity to promote in-depth development of bilateral ties. Berisha reaffirmed that Albania would unswervingly adhere to the one-China policy and asked Wu to convey his greetings to Primer Wen Jiabao. He looked forward to meeting with Primer Wen again.

Wu said that the Chinese government attaches great importance to ties with Albania and always regards Albania as a good friend and a good partner in south-eastern Europe. China is ready to take the opportunity of the 60th anniversary of diplomatic ties to strengthen political dialogue at all levels and expand pragmatic cooperation in economy and trade in a bid to push the relationship between the two countries to a new level through joint efforts.

Wu and his delegation arrived in Tirana on February 24 for political consultation between the two Foreign Ministries. Wu and Albanian Deputy Foreign Minister Anton Gurakuqi attended the consultation.
