On January 13, 2009, Ugandan President Yoweri Museveni met with visiting Chinese Foreign Minister Yang Jiechi in Entebbe, which is situated about 40 km south of Kampala, the capital of Uganda.
Museveni spoke highly of bilateral ties. He said over the years, the two countries have trusted and supported each other in the political area and conducted sound cooperation in the fields of economy, trade, agriculture and infrastructure. He expressed hope that both sides will further enhance high-level exchanges and cooperation in international affairs, continuously deepen cooperation in all areas and push forward the ties.
Yang said since the establishment of China-Uganda diplomatic ties 47 years ago, their relations have been developing smoothly. Both sides have always shown mutual understanding and support for each other and engaged in fruitful cooperation in economy, trade, culture, education and public health. The two countries have also maintained close coordination and collaboration in international affairs. The Ugandan government adheres to the one-China policy and supports China’s grand cause of reunification, said Yang, expressing appreciation to Uganda’s support on issues concerning China’s key interests. China cherishes the traditional friendship between the two countries and is ready to enhance exchanges with Uganda, expand mutually beneficial cooperation and push their friendly cooperative relation to a new level.
Yang said since the holding of the Beijing Summit of the Forum on China-Africa Cooperation, a range of follow-up actions have been under implementation with close cooperation between China and Africa. Both sides have witnessed closer China-Africa political relations, deepening pragmatic cooperation and enhanced mutual support and collaboration in international affairs. The eight policy measures to enhance practical cooperation between China and Africa are being implemented smoothly on the whole. China is ready to work with African countries including Uganda to earnestly advance the new type of China-Africa strategic partnership for the benefit of Chinese and African peoples, he added.
On the same day, Yang also held talks with Sam Kutesa, Uganda's Minister of Foreign Affairs. Both sides exchanged in-depth views on furthering bilateral friendly cooperation. Following the talks, the two foreign ministers attended a signing ceremony of relevant cooperation agreements between the two countries and jointly met the press.
