On June 1, 2006, Vice Foreign Minister Zhang Yesui held consultation with visiting Secretary of State of the Swiss Ministry of Foreign Affairs Michael Ambühl. Zhang made positive comments on bilateral relations, indicating that the Chinese government attaches great importance to developing relations with Switzerland and both sides can conduct substantive cooperation in more areas.
Ambühl noted that currently bilateral relations have been developing soundly with very broad area for bilateral cooperation. Switzerland, as one of the first western countries to acknowledge China, has always adhered to the one-China policy and does not recognize that Taiwan is a country. At the same time, Switzerland holds that Tibet is an autonomous region of China, as well as a part of China.
Both sides also exchanged views on current major international issues.
At the invitation of Vice Foreign Minister Zhang Yesui, Ambühl and his delegation arrived in Beijing on May 31 for a three-day visit.
